Umetnik Simon Kocjančič se udejstvuje na področjih risbe, slikarstva, grafike in umetniških fanzinov. Pri slikanju snuje gmoto barv in oblik, kjer nedefinirani ali polprepoznavni motivi nagovarjajo v svoji krhkosti in mikavnih kompozicijah. Deformirane podobe se ne podrejajo prepoznavni logiki, temveč izvabljajo raznolike interpretacije. Odsotnost pripovedi nadomesti občutek, slutnja, možnost vživetja in doživetja. Umetnik pravi, da ga zanima vmesnost med figuraliko in abstrakcijo, kjer s poudarjeno slikarsko potezo in lovljenjem naključij nastane odmik od prikazovanja stvarnosti. Kot izhodišče mu največkrat služijo že obstoječe podobe, včasih je dovolj le spomin ali (pretekli) občutek. Platna naseljujejo bolj ali manj abstrahirane podobe, ki brez teže obremenjevanja fragmente sklenejo v novo celoto, ki ima le malo skupnega z začetnim izhodiščem. Pri tem igrajo pomembno vlogo eksperimentalna raziskovanja, ki niso vezana na vnaprej določen cilj. Umetniku je blizu underground scena, ki se zoprstavlja neizbežnemu in očitnemu, to kljubovalno izbiro pa vpeljuje tako v motive kot v barve, ki stremijo k zabrisanosti in neprepoznavnosti. Že od slikarskih začetkov se poigrava z lastnim mešanjem oljnih barv, kjer se izogiba čistim, primarnim barvam. V zadnjih letih sploh za večje formate uporablja tudi akrilne in stenske barve. Ob določanju odtenkov gledalca spravi v zadrego, ko ta ne ve, ali je nekaj sive, modre ali zelene barve. Včasih ga bolj zanese v smer figuralike in se začnejo kazati obrisi hibridnih grotesknih pošasti, spet drugič v mehko abstrakcijo. Največkrat ulovi uravnotežen vmesen prostor, kjer se intuitivno drsenje čopiča kljub tvegani nejasnosti, vmesnoti in zmedenosti sklene v samosvoje, pristno slikovno polje.
Razstava Nikoli ne vem predstavlja avtorjeva novonastala dela, ki jih je snoval v umirjenem ritmu ruralnega življenja, vstran od mestnega vrveža. Kljub osebni kritičnosti do današnje družbe in relevantnega dogajanja, le – to stežka enoznačno prevaja na platna. Nov val slik tako predstavlja odlagališče misli, pri čemer na nas padeta domačnost in odtujitev hkrati. Umetniku ni nikoli bila blizu ideja, da bi gledalcu povedal, kaj je na sliki in kako jo mora dojeti, saj ga noče prikrajšati za užitek ob iskanju in tvorjenju pomenov. Simon Kocjančič is an artist who works in the fields of drawing, painting, graphics and artistic fanzines. His painting process involves a mass of colours and shapes, the undefined or semi-recognisable motifs of which address us with their fragility and delicate compositions. These deformed images do not submit to recognisable logic, but invite a multitude of interpretations. The absence of a storyline is replaced by a feeling, a sense, a possibility of identifying with and delving into the creation. The artist says that his interest lies in the interplay between figuralism and abstraction, where, with an emphasized stroke of his brush and the search for coincidences, he depicts the departure from the presentation of reality. As a starting point, he often applies pre-existing images, sometimes based solely on memory or a (past) feeling. His canvases are inhabited by more or less abstracted images that, without burdening the image’s fragmentation, create an entirely new totality, which has very little in common with the starting point. In this process, a very important role is played by experimental researches that are not connected to a predetermined goal. The artist is no stranger to the underground scene, which defies the inevitable and the obvious. He applies this defiance to both motifs and colours that strive toward the blurred and unrecognizable..
The exhibition I Never Know represents the author’s latest works, created in the calm rhythm of rural life, away from the noise of the inner city. Despite personal criticism of today’s society and relevant events, he finds mirroring the latter on canvas rather challenging. The new wave of images thus represents a repository of thought, presenting us with a feeling of homeliness and, at the same, that of alienation. The artist has never flirted with the idea of revealing to the viewer what exactly is depicted on his paintings and how they should be interpreted, as he does not wish to deprive us of the pleasure of searching for and imagining new meanings. By looking at the canvases, the final conclusion may be identical to the initial outline: I never know.
